Should I Use CBD Oil?

These days you see and hear about CBD oil everywhere. People talk about the benefits and healing properties and how it’s changed their lives. So, is the hype real? Does CBD oil really have the ability to cure what ails you? Before we answer that question, let’s take a look at what CBD oil is.

CBD is derived from a plant called Cannabis Sativa, which also produces hemp and marijuana. The oil is actually resin extracted from cannabis flowers and buds and is typically diluted with an MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) oil usually derived from coconut oil.

What are Cannabinoids?

Both marijuana and CBD are cannabinoids. They work on the body’s endocannabinoid system which helps you adapt to outside stressors. The one major difference between CBD and Marijuana is that CBD does not contain the psychoactive compound THC that is found in marijuana. This means you won’t get high from using it.

There are 2 types of cannabinoids – Endo, which is produced naturally within our bodies and Phyto, which comes from plants. CBD is a Phyto, and when ingested, it basically gives a boost to what your body already naturally produces.

So now that you know where CBD comes from and how it works in the body, let’s get back to the topic at hand… Is talking CBD oil good for me?

The answer is yes!

CBD oil has many great benefits and can do wonders not only for a healthy body but also a healthy state of mind. People have been using it for thousands of years to treat everything from pain to anxiety issues.  Let’s take a look at some of the biggest reasons people have adopted CBD into their regimen:

Pain Relief – This is one of the top reasons people are incorporating CBD into their lives. A study conducted in 2015 suggests that both under the tongue and topical use may reduce chronic pain and inflammation. Arthritis was the main focus of this study showing that in just 4 days when tested topically on laboratory rats, pain and inflammation, were shown to be reduced considerably.

Manage Stress & Anxiety – Mental health benefits like anxiety and stress reduction have also been linked to the use of CBD oil. Research suggests the effectiveness of CBD oil may have “considerable potential as a treatment for multiple anxiety disorders.” Yet another study touts a very high potential that CBD can reduce anxiety in children. In a nutshell, CBD triggers the good chemicals in our body like serotonin and anandamide, which make us happy.

Combat Insomnia – There are many reasons people suffer from insomnia. Pain and stress are only a of couple causes. In 2017, the WHO published a report that stated in part “There is also preliminary evidence that CBD may be a useful treatment for a number of other medical conditions. More research is needed, but there is promising evidence for chronic pain, anxiety and other challenges that prevent us from a deep sleep.” A 2014 study indicates the CBD may help with the REM portion of the sleep cycle which is necessary to promote restfulness.

A Possible Cancer Treatment – Although research is still in the early stages, there is an increased hope that CBD may actually prevent cancer cell growth. The National Cancer Institute says CBD may help alleviate cancer symptoms and the treatment side effects – although they don’t fully endorse the use in these early stages of testing. The most promising research currently being conducted is in regards to how tumor growth. Because of its ability to reduce inflammation, it may slow the reproduction of tumors.

Other benefits are also being studied further such as:

  • Acne Reduction (1)

  • Lower Blood Pressure (2)

  • Diabetes Prevention (3)

  • Substance Abuse Treatment (4)

The list really does go on and on. There is so much more to be learned about the benefits that CBD oil can bring us. We’ve only touched the tip of the iceberg.

What About Side Effects?

Some people have reported minimal side effects when using CBD oil. Although none are serious, the most common are:

  • Fatigue

  • Diarrhea

  • Changes in appetite

  • Drug interactions with other medications

As with any supplement, always check with your doctor beforehand about his or her thoughts on CBD usage and dosage.
