Live Stem Cells vs Umbilical Cord Stem Cells

Stem Cell Therapy for Musculoskeletal Pain in Fredericksburg, VA

Pain can upend your life. Whether it’s chronic or injury-induced, musculoskeletal pain can disrupt your work, your lifestyle and even your relationships. But it doesn’t have to.

Your body is brimming with regenerative potential. Stem cells harvested from your bone marrow and fat, or from umbilical cord blood may reduce or eliminate your pain by regenerating your tissue. Stem cell therapy may also revive the range of movement you may have thought you’d lost permanently.

Unlike surgery, which removes tissue and bone from your body, stem cell therapy harvests live or umbilical cells, injects them directly into your pain site, and stimulates your own damaged cells to regenerate themselves.

Dr. Truong can muster up the healing abilities of your own cells to treat musculoskeletal conditions like tendonitis, cartilage and ligament injuries, advanced arthritis, and even chronic pain. Depending on your age, body type, genetics, and injury severity, the stem cells Dr. Truong delivers may continue producing human growth factors for weeks, sometimes even months.

Injured cells in your skin, bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and connective joints send out signals. Stem cells respond to those signals, migrating to the injured tissue and releasing proteins along with growth factors that nudge your own cells to start regenerating. They also inhibit your body’s inflammation so you can heal.

Researchers are currently studying the potential of stem cells to treat heart disease, certain cancers, stroke, diabetes, spinal cord injury, severe burns, osteoarthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s and MS. Dr. Truong is always updating her knowledge on the latest studies and will offer these treatments too, as they become clinically validated.

Where Do Stem Cells Come From?

Your body has more than 200 different types of cells – each geared toward a different function: skin cells, blood cells, bone cells, brain cells and various organ cells.

But all of them started as blank slate cells.

Umbilical cord stem cells are completely undifferentiated cells at time of harvest from a newborn’s umbilical cord blood. They are pluripotent and have the potential to become any type of cell in the body – nervous system cells, sensory organ cells, circulatory tissue cells, skin cells, bone cells, cartilage cells, and more. However, once umbilical cord blood is processed for sterility and packaged, it contains no LIVE cells – only growth factors and anti-inflammation properties.

Live autologous stem cells harvested from a patient’s fat or bone marrow are multipotent – they have limits on the potential types of tissue they can become. Live regenerative cell therapy, which sources bone marrow and fat to induce healing, carries fewer risks because stem cells are harvested from a patient’s body, decreasing the possibility of rejection or allergic reaction.

Live stems cells are more potent and natural than umbilical cord cells.

What Are Stem Cells Used For?

Live stem cells (fat and bone marrow) are rich in hematopoietic (HSCs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which are used to treat blood cell-based disorders like leukemia and anemia. HSCs are the foundation of our immune systems – they can develop into any type of blood cell.

Stem cells can be used to regenerate tissue in patients with:

      • Advanced arthritis
      • Chronic fibromyalgia / chronic fatigue pain
      • Chronic fractures
      • Damaged ligaments
      • Damaged spinal discs
      • Severely degenerated tendons
      • Torn cartilage

      Types of Stem Cells

Both live and umbilical cord regenerative cells can be delivered together with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) into the injured site for dual-action regeneration.

Live Autologous Bone Marrow Stem Cells

Bone marrow is the flexible tissue inside your bones that produces red blood cells, mesenchymal stems cells and hematopoietic cells.

Dr. Truong will extract a bone marrow sample from the iliac crest at the base of your spine (a mildly painful procedure performed under anesthesia). This will take less than 5 minutes.

Bone marrow stem cells, however, decrease with age.

      Live Autologous Adipose Stem Cells

Adult fat (adipose) tissue is mostly made up of adipocytes, which store your energy. Like bone marrow, fat contains mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which have the potential to turn into bone, muscle, ligament, soft tissue, cartilage cells.

Dr. Truong will harvest cells from your hip or outer thigh fat tissue using liposuction, which is less invasive than bone marrow extraction. She’ll spin your fatty tissue in a centrifuge to separate the stem cells, which she will then inject into your damaged, pain-ridden tissue.

Liposuction can yield approximately five hundred thousand to one million stem cells per cc of fat. So it’s possible you may get as many as 10 to 40 million cells from one treatment.

Fat cells are abundant in quantities up to 2500 times those seen in bone marrow. When injected skillfully they can regenerate new bone, cartilage, tendon (connective tissue), muscle, blood vessel, and nerve tissue cells. Fat stem cells do not decrease with age.

      Umbilical Cord Blood Cells

Umbilical cord blood cells are collected shortly after a baby’s birth via a pain-free, non-invasive donation – umbilical cords are routinely discarded after birth. Birthing mothers are thoroughly screened and samples are thoroughly tested in FDA monitored labs before being delivered to providers.

Dr. Truong will carefully consider your, weight, age and general health before deciding which type and how many stem cells to deliver to your pain-plagued tissue.

How Long Does It Take To See Results From Stem Cell Therapy?

After determining which regenerative cell therapy (bone, fat, or umbilical cord blood) best matches your condition, Dr. Truong will customize your regeneration and recovery protocols. Before undergoing stem cell therapy of any kind, you will be asked to minimize alcohol and tobacco intake, as these substances tend to impede the body’s ability to release stem cells.

The healing process begins immediately after the injections are delivered. Generally, the repair process takes three months to complete, but in most cases, you’ll start noticing improvement in 2-4 weeks, with maximum recovery by 12 weeks.

Because stem cell therapy relies on your body’s own regenerative powers – which dwindle with age – the process is highly unique each time. Orthopedic patients may not see results for several months, whereas some other diseases may stimulate a more immediate response.

After investing all this time, energy, and money into their health you should maintain the regenerative effects of your stem cell injections with a heart and bone healthy diet as well as nutritional supplementation of your deficiencies – which Dr. Truong and her team are happy to assist you with.
